A gate valve, alternatively referred to as a sluice valve, is a type of valve that operates by raising a barrier (gate) to clear the fluid's passage. It possesses the advantage of occupying minimal space along the pipe axis and causing negligible obstruction to fluid flow when fully opened. The gate valve's gate faces can either be parallel or, more commonly, wedge-shaped to facilitate effective sealing by exerting pressure on the sealing surface.
