MacConkey Broth is a selective and differential microbiological culture medium primarily used for detecting and isolating gram-negative bacteria, especially coliforms, from samples such as water, food, and clinical specimens. The medium contains peptones, bile salts, crystal violet, and lactose. Lactose fermentation by coliforms produces acid, turning the medium pink. Non-fermenters remain colorless.
